Binge-Worthy TV Shows

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week, she will post a new Top Ten list topic for everyone to weigh-in on. This Week

Bingeworthy TV Shows/Amazing Movies (The new fall TV season is starting up this month, so let’s talk about what shows everyone should watch when they’re not reading!)

I do love movies, but one of my favorite hobbies is binge-watching shows on Netflix and Hulu, and as the above blurb mentions, shows are finally coming back! Yet another reason fall is the best season of all. And yes, it is fall. When PSLs come back, it’s officially fall. I don’t care what your calendar says.

10 Binge-Worthy Shows You Should be Watching

(1) Grey’s Anatomy

If you aren’t watching Grey’s, what is wrong with you?.. It’s been on television for over 10 years and is literally the best show in the universe. My girlfriend introduced me to the show my second year of college and it changed my life. AKA ruined my life, because every evening after class I would come back and watch every episode ever (thank you, Netflix and Hulu). Grey’s will forever remind me of college. And good news: season 15 airs later this month! So sign in to your Netflix account, invite over all your best friends or force your s.o. to sit down and binge all 14 seasons before the premiere! Make sure to buy some tissues…

(2) 13 Reasons Why

I know this show gets a lot of shit. People either love it or hate it. And I’m really not going to get into the argument of it all—you can find plenty of those posts/articles all over the place. I, for one, enjoy 13 Reasons Why. I liked the book as a high schooler and was really excited when this show premiered. Season 1 was a lot better than season 2, in my opinion, but the show as a whole is an interesting character study. It is graphic, though, but each episode has trigger warnings beforehand, so seriously, watch at your own risk. You can find both seasons right now on Netflix.

(3) Game of Thrones

If you don’t have access to HBO, you better start saving your pennies, because buying all the seasons of Game of Thrones is pretty pricey (but they are worth purchasing). GoT is the fantasy drama you’ve (hopefully not) been missing out on. Before I started watching, all I heard about the show was that “it’s just a bunch of sex.” It’s really not, to be honest, so if that’s holding you back, don’t believe it. It’s really not too bad. And it’s an incredible show! It’s based on the book series by George R. R. Martin (which I haven’t read yet…). The final season airs next year, so get started!!

(4) Black Mirror

If you’re a fan of sci-fi/horror shows, hopefully you’ve seen the first few seasons of Black Mirror. It’s definitely an interesting concept of a show: each episode features different characters in different scenarios in various future dystopian/post-apocalyptic worlds. Most of the episodes are dark and end unhappily. But there are some happy gems in the rough to keep your eye out for. All 4 seasons are on Netflix. Go check them out.

(5) Stranger Things

On the theme of sci-fi/horror, Stranger Things should hopefully be on your list of favorite shows. I know it’s on mine. I binge-watched both seasons last year around Halloween and instantly became obsessed. Winona Ryder, an ’80s setting, infinite D&D references—seriously, what more do you need? Both seasons are on Netflix and hopefully season 3 will arrive soon because I am deprived…

(6) Riverdale

Around the same time I binged Stranger Things, I also blew through both seasons of Riverdale. I hated the show at first—it was too Gen Z for me. The dialogue was cringe-worthy, the acting was ok, and story wasn’t that interesting. The only reason I pushed through to the end was because I wanted to find out who killed Jason Blossom. But as I made my way through the last episodes of season 1 and moved into season 2, I actually became obsessed with everything. And now I’m waiting for season 3 this year! The show is based on characters from Archie comics. Check out the show on Netflix before season 3 airs on The CW.

(7) Dark

Dark was advertised as a ‘more mature’ Stranger Things, but the shows really aren’t that similar. It’s the first German-language original Netflix series and absolutely blew me away. It’s slow to start, but once you start fitting the puzzle pieces together, you realize you’re on the last episode and then suddenly you’re craving season 2 and are only filled with questions. And guess what? I’m still waiting for season 2!!! It doesn’t have a release date yet, so you have plenty of time to catch up. The first season is mind-blowing. And let me advise that you watch it in German with your native language subtitles—it really is an experience.

(8) Parks and Recreation

Alright, if you need a break from all the creepy/depressing shows you just binged, take a break with my favorite comedy (and TV show in general) Parks and Recreation. People are constantly arguing online about whether Parks and Rec is better or worse than The Office, but can’t you just…watch both? Parks is hilarious and has an all-star cast. Want to see Star Lord before he became a Guardian of the Galaxy? What about Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman before they started hosting a crafting competition show? How about Adam Scott, just because, you know, he’s hot and hilarious and his character Ben is my soulmate? Honestly, just watch the show. All 7 seasons are on Netflix and the last episode will make you cry.

(9) Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Here’s another comedy to help you recover from all the creepyness. I have just recently started watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine after witnessing all the sad people on Twitter mourning about its cancellation, then celebrating a day later when NBC revived it. It has slowly climbed to the top of my favorites list, which is surprising because comedies usually aren’t my cup of tea. However, this cop comedy is absolutely the funniest show on television and you need it in your life. Who knew Andy Samberg would wind up being so hilarious and endearing? And why am I so attracted to him (and Stephanie Beatriz…I mean, come on, look at her)??? Find all 5 seasons on Hulu!

(10) The End of the F***ing World

Okay, this one is…weird. You’ve been warned. The End of the F***ing World only has 1 season on Netflix right now and is based on a graphic novel of the same name. It’s about a boy who believes he’s a psychopath. He wants to kill someone. So when a girl is interested in him and wants to run away from home, he goes with her and plans on killing her. Like I said, it’s super weird, but that’s just my style. This show is super binge-worthy with only 8 short episodes. Watch it!!

Let me know if you agree or disagree with my binge-worthy shows, and feel free to post your links or lists in the comments. Hopefully, though, you’re busy catching up on these awesome shows.

  1. I am a huge TV Nerd and have watch all of these shows, LoL. A great list of shows here! I was so happy NBC picked up Brooklyn 99. It is just too good of a show to have gotten cancelled like that by FOX. Loved Dark! And yes, why hasn’t the return date for Season Two been announced already!?!, LoL. What a bizarre and interesting show. I love Riverdale. Although, I thought Season One was a bit more together story wise than Season Two. Either way, still very much a favorite and can not wait for Season Three!

    1. Yes!!! I’m so glad you’ve already seen all these!! I’m so pumped for Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Riverdale, and totally agree that they need to give us an update on Dark S2.

      1. I am soooo behind on Grey’s Anatomy. I definitely want to start watching it again one of these days. It’ll probably take a few years, soooo many episodes I’m behind on, LoL. Katherine Heigl was still on the show, that’s how behind I am on that show, LoL. I did watch the spin-off, Station 19, over the summer. Definite recommend if you haven’t watched it yet.
