Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Release Date: 2018
Yes hello and welcome to my blog. It has been a long while since I’ve recommended a TV show. I don’t start too many new shows anymore, especially during the fall when all the good shows come back, like Riverdale and Grey’s Anatomy. But a new show came to Netflix this Halloween season that caught my interest: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Based on an Archie Comic (yes, like Riverdale), the show explores a darker version of the 90’s Sabrina we all know and love.
Sabrina, a half-witch, lives with her aunties and cousin in the town of Greendale (the neighboring town of Riverdale, for all you fans out there). As her sixteenth birthday approaches, Sabrina must choose between the mortal world and the magical one. But Sabrina enjoys being a part of both worlds, and she’s determined to keep it that way, one way or another.
The show has received a lot of criticism about being too over-the-top, too unrealistic, misusing and misportraying certain religious aspects, and so forth. I understand these criticisms to an extent. But I also think it’s just a TV show. It’s not trying to be realistic. It’s not trying to factually depict religions. It’s not meant to be taken seriously. It’s literally just an adaptation of a comic. So, while I think it’s important to analyze texts and films and shows, I also think it’s important to recognize the work as fiction. You shouldn’t take it too seriously. I sure didn’t, and I ended up enjoying it.
The show is ridiculous. There’s definitely some parts where I was like, wow, this is so cringe-y. But I think that’s the point, and it definitely works. It’s not necessarily a scary story but more just interesting and spooky. I can’t help but laugh every time the Church of Night chant “hail Satan.” It’s hilarious.
As for the characters, I love them all. They are so perfectly cast and each bring their own personalities that really make the show. Ambrose is easily is 100% my favorite. Sabrina…well, I definitely don’t like her as much as the 90’s Sabrina. CAOS Sabrina is…well, she’s ok. She’s pretty gullible and way too trustworthy. She makes countless bad decisions. She’s rash. She’s kind of…not the best person. Especially in the last few episodes. I really root for her in the beginning, but as the story progresses, I like her less and less. So we’ll see how S2 goes…
My only real complaint is the strange camera angles and the weird blurring techniques they used throughout the show. It got to the point where it’s all I noticed. So, hopefully S2 uses less of that…
There’s only 10 episodes, and you can stream them all right now on Netflix, if you haven’t done so already. Watch it. Have fun with it. Don’t take it too seriously. And let me know if you’ve watched it already, and your opinions on it!
