Simon Snow’s story is over. He’s no longer the Chosen One. He’s no longer a mage. He can barely get himself up off the couch. And his relationship with Baz is…very much uncertain. Penelope decides what they all need is a holiday. So Simon, Penny, and Baz wind up on a road trip across western America, and run into just as much trouble as you’d expect from this tremendous trio…
Wayward Son picks up shortly after Carry On’s conclusion. Penny and Baz are at university, and Simon…well, he was at uni, but now he’s just on the couch. The book is told in the same format as its predecessor and contains just as much excitement. Though I have to say it was KILLING ME at the same time because SIMON AND BAZ ARE NOT FALLING IN LOVE AND ARE NOT STEALING ROMANTIC KISSES AND THAT’S LITERALLY WHAT I CAME HERE FOR!!!!!! …. Okay. Deep breaths. Where was I?
Though we do get a new character thrown into the mix with Shepherd, the trio’s “normal” American tour guide, we see significantly fewer chapters of his (AND fewer of Agatha’s!) than of Simon and Baz, so that did make me happy. Penelope was kind of a bitch this go around, though, which was kind of disappointing. And Simon. Oh lord. Don’t get me started on him…
To be honest, though, I actually related to Simon a lot in this book. He’s depressed. He feels like he’s not enough for the guy he’s in love with. He wants to be with Baz but simultaneously wants to hide from him. It’s killing his relationship and it’s so relatable and IT’S MAKING ME WANT TO SET MYSELF ON FIRE BECAUSE I’M SO IN LOVE WITH THEM!!!!!
Seriously. Rainbow Rowell. Please give them the happy ending they deserve. I’m begging you. And please release book 3, like, tomorrow?
Despite ripping my heart out over and over again, Wayward Son is a delightful sequel and one I highly recommend. It has all the same magic and adventure as book 1, and is a thrill to read. Road trips and vampires and magic and heartbreak… What more could you want? …other than more Snowbaz scenes?..
