10 Feel-Good Reads That Will Make You Smile

This is the first weekend that we’re really starting to feel the effects of Coronavirus in the U.S. Most likely, like me, you’re sitting in your isolated home, with lots of stress and not enough distractions (or toilet paper…thanks, guys). I’ve seen a few people post things like ‘apocalyptic books to read during coronavirus outbreak,’ which some people feel is in poor taste and others enjoy. Though I am using the outbreak as an excuse to blog, I don’t want to center my post around the virus. Sure, maybe you are stressed out/bored from self-quarantine and need something to do. Or you’re stressed out about work/school. Or you just had a bad day. Or you’re reading this in 2021 and Corornavirus is just a distant memory and you just want some feel-good books to read. Whatever the case, I want to provide a short list of books I’ve recently read that have put a smile on my face. I hope these books can make you happy and distract you from whatever is stressing you out right now, reader.

10 Feel-Good Books That Will Make You Smile

1) Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell, Faith Erin Hicks

Not only will Deja and Josiah make you grin ear to ear, but this book will also have you missing (and, in my case, craving) the fall season. Oh, PSLs, how I miss you…

2) Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Other than realizing that Rianbow Rowell is practically guaranteed to make you smile, you’ll also come to the realization of how much you love Simon and Baz. Carry On will absorb you into a magical world and is sure to distract you from whatever’s going on in your life, but the budding relationship between Simon and Baz will absolutely make you squee like a teenage girl (or, maybe that was just me…).

3) To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Don’t just read this one, but watch it, too! Too All the Boys is a great book and series, and the Netflix adaptations are just as swoon-worthy. Lara Jean and Peter’s relationship (both fake and real) is the cutest thing you’ll read about this weekend, and unless you’re heartless, Lara Jean’s family is sure to make you smile, too. This story is all around a heartwarmer.

4) What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli, Adam Silvera

Another gay romance that filled my heart: Arthur and Ben. These two are cringe-y, I will say that. But also their relationship is 100% realistic and honest. And though there are some moments that I’d rather not read again (or experience myself), this story is a cute one, and I recommend it. It will make anyone’s little gay heart fill with happiness.

5) Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I’m just realizing how much gay romance I’ve got on this list… BUT THAT’S WHAT MAKES ME SMILE, OKAY. Hopefully it makes you smile, too, because Simon vs. is a really good book. As well as a pretty good Netflix adaptation, too! AND I think it’ll be a series soon, as well? See, lots of ways to enjoy this story.

6) Bloom by Kevin Panetta, Savanna Ganucheau

If you’re in the mood to bake, why note enjoy yet another gay romance while you’re at it! (These stories just make me happy, #sorrynotsorry.) Bloom will make your stomach rumble and your mouth smile (and water). These two boys fall in love while working in a bakery together!! A dream come true, am I right?

7) The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang

This one is just so unique and absolutely a book I would have loved to read as a kid. It’s got a great message, a cute romance, and a very awesome MC. Prince Sebastian looks way better in a dress than I ever will, just saying.

8) P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

Do you ever just want, like, a fluff novel? Nothing with real substance, just fun? If so, Kasie West is the one for you. And P.S. I Like You is a great place to start, as it’s feel-good to the max.

9) Scott Pilgrim, Vol 1.: Scott’s Precious Little Life by Bryan Lee O’Malley

If you loved the movie, you’ll love the books. They’re so ridiculous and fun, they’re bound to cheer you up. And there’s multiple books in the series, so there’s lots to enjoy.

10) The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

This book is equal parts CUTE AF and HEART-WRENCHING. But it’s so, so good. I mean, if anything, just read it for the nolaebang scene. ❤

So whether you’re quarantined or just needing a smile, I hope these books can help! And if you are experiencing effects of Coronavirus, like libraries shutting down, don’t forget you can use your library card to loan audiobooks and eBooks!

  1. These books aren’t on my radar but I appreciate your list. I really like your intro too, thanks for that and the reminder at the end. Great idea for a post. I personally can’t do an apocalyptic read right now. Well actually I should say I am not interested in reading just any such book. Like the movie Contagion, great movie saw it years ago, but something like that is NOT in the cards for me right now. Nope, gotta keep it together. 😀 Take care of yourself as well! Glad you’re still blogging and I hope you’re safe and well.

    1. Thanks so much! I’ve heard a lot of people say they just can’t read anything apocalyptic or dark at all right now, and I totally get it. Hopefully more people will start posting about happy books to read during this crazy time. Thanks for reading and stay safe yourself!
