Being trapped in a library may sound like a dream come true, but for Autumn, it’s actually a nightmare. She’s supposed to going to a cabin with some friends for the weekend, where she’s finally going to confess her feelings to Jeff. Instead, she gets left behind at the library, and locked in. No phone. No food. No warm clothes. And to make things worse, she’s not alone—Dax, the mysterious loner, seems to have gotten trapped with her. Can she really survive four freezing, boring days trapped with Dax?

Ah, don’t you just love a ridiculous, cute teen love story every now and then? I know I do. By Your Side is told in first-person POV from Autumn’s perspective. She winds up getting left behind by her friends and trapped inside the local library. With Dax. The loner with a bad reputation who seems to want literally nothing to do with good-girl Autumn. But with four days and not much to do, the two wind up getting to know each other. What can I say—I’m a sucker for good-girl x bad-boy romances. I like those almost as much as enemies to lovers. Sigh.

Kasie West novels are such a breeze to read. They’re quick, fun, and usually pretty light. They tend to touch on heavy subjects, but typically the romance stays in the foreground and moves the story along pretty fast. The characters aren’t the most complex, and the story is fairly predictable, but I love that about her novels. Like, that’s literally why I read a Kasie West novel: for easy fun. I love the cute romance, the unique story, and the banter-y dialogue between the main characters. I like Autumn a lot because I can relate to her, and I like Dax because he’s really not the bad guy everyone makes him out to be. Gossip and assumptions are shit, as we all known post-high school.

If you’re looking for some fluff to fluff up your reading challenge this late in the year, I definitely recommend a Kasie West novel, especially By Your Side. Great characters and a fun premise. And though it sounds fun to be locked in a library with a dreamy guy, the lack of food would definitely have killed me. A girl gotta eat.
