Five teens, who couldn’t be more different from one another, wind up together in detention: Nate, the drug dealer who’s on probation; Bronwyn, the future valedictorian; Cooper, Bayview High’s star baseball pitcher; Addie, the popular girl with the popular boyfriend; and Simon, the creator of Bayview’s notorious gossip app, where he spills the secrets of all his classmates, sometimes ruining their lives. But before detention is over, Simon is dead, and the other kids who were in the room with him quickly become the police’s number one suspects. They all claim to be innocent, but is one of them lying?

I went into this book not expecting much. I love YA and I love murder mysteries, but I tend to have a hard time finding a really good YA mystery. So I was pleasantly surprised with how hard I fell for this book. I could not put it down!

One of Us Is Lying is told in first-person POV with alternating perspective chapters for each of the four teens. I thought that was really powerful, because we as readers get close to all of the characters, and as the story goes on, we really don’t want to find out that any of them are murderers! Seriously, even if you don’t like any of the characters at first, you will by the end of the book.

The story is like Breakfast Club had a baby with an Agatha Christie whodunnit. The characters are stereotyped on the outside, but we learn there’s a lot more to them than meets the eye. I loved the mystery aspect to it, but also enjoyed the character development and romance. It gets pretty suspense at some parts, too! It’s an interesting story from start to finish, and I loved every second of it.

This is a really fun YA mystery that I highly recommend. Even if you think it might not be for you, it truly surprised me with how great it is. It looks like there is a sequel out now featuring different characters, so I’m not sure how excited I am for that, but stay tuned. You know I’ll be reading it.
